MANILA, Philippines – Brothers Phil and James Younghusband will not be with the Philippine men’s national football team when the Azkals take on Laos in an international friendly match on Monday, September 10.

The Younghusband brothers flew back to Manila on the eve of the first death anniversary of their late mother, Susan, who succumed to a massive heart attack last year at the age of 49.

“Unfortunately, we will miss the game against Laos, but this is an important day for our family,” said James. “We have spoken with management and they understand.”

“We remain fully committed to the national team and look forward to re-joining them in other preparations for the Suzuki Cup late this year,” added Phil.

Azkals head coach Hans Michael Weiss have confirmed that the Younghusband brothers will be absent for the Laos match.

“The brothers and myself have had many meetings, and this was agreed upon that they would miss the Laos game,” Weiss said. “We made it clear with each other awhile ago and there is no problem.”

Phil scored the Azkals’ second goal in its 2-0 victory over longtime tormentor Singapore last Friday.

The match against Laos is the last of a series of friendlies that the Azkals will play as part of their preparations for the AFF Suzuki Cup. They earlier had a goalless draw with Cambodia last Wednesday.
