MANILA, Philippines – The University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers again had to claw its way back in the final period to win, defeating the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons, 75-68, at the Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday.
The Tigers trailed UP by seven points entering the fourth quarter, but a 16-0 run which was highlighted by back to back three-point plays by guard Jeric Fortuna swung the momentum in favor of UST.
Fortuna finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
UST’s Aljon Mariano also pulled through in the fourth period, when he scored 9 of his 16 points.
Karim Abdul chipped in big numbers for UST anew, scoring 16 points and grabbing 21 boards, the highest of any UAAP player this season.
UP was able to maintain the lead for most part of the game, but they struggled offensively as UST made its fourth quarter run.
Mike Silungan led the Fighting Maroons with 14 points.
He shot 5 out of 9 from the field in the first half, but struggled with his shooting in the second half, missing 6 of 7 attempts.
The win puts UST at the solo number 2 spot (9-3) in the 75th UAAP men’s basketball tournament, only a game behind league-leading Ateneo (9-2).
UP, meanwhile, dropped to 1-11.
