MANILA, Philippines – Georges St.-Pierre is likely to face fellow mixed martial arts (MMA) top pound-for-pound fighter Anderson Silva, said Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) president Dana White.
White said that if St.-Pierre convincingly defeats Carlos Condit in UFC 154, fight fans could be treated to a face off between St.-Pierre and Silva.
“I think we're pretty close. If Georges St-Pierre beats Condit, that could be the next fight,” White said in Yahoo! Sports.
White has long hinted at a possible super fight between Silva and St.-Pierre.
But St.-Pierre was sidelined from MMA action for nine months because of an ACL injury.
White said both fighters wanted to test themselves against each other despite being separated by two divisions.
St.-Pierre is the reigning champion in the welterweight division (170 pounds), while Silva is the king of the middleweights (185 pounds).
“These guys want to fight each other now,” said White.
“I think that if you're a fighter and you've dominated as long as Anderson has, and you've been great as long as Georges has, you finally say ‘You know what? I want to test myself; I think I can beat this guy.”
