MANILA – Malacanang on Thursday lauded the victory of Gilas Pilipinas over Senegal in the FIBA World Cup of Basketball at the Palacio Municipal de Deportes San Pablo in Seville, Spain.
"We join our people in proudly celebrating the triumph of Gilas Pilipinas over Senegal in the FIBA World Cup. They played with grit and determination, demonstrating the can-do attitude that has propelled the Philippines to being the fastest growing economy in the region,” Communications Secretary Sonny Coloma said in a statement.
Gilas Pilipinas finally nabbed a victory after four tries, the Philippines’ first win in the tournament in 36 years.
The Philippine national team defeated Senegal, 81-79, in overtime.
However, the team will not advance to the second round of the tournament due to losses to Croatia, Greece, Argentina, and Puerto Rico.
