MANILA, Philippines – De La Salle University forged a women's championship showdown against the University of Santo Tomas (UST) as Kim Fajardo and Cyd Demecillo eliminated Adamson University, 21-11, 21-14, Thursday in the UAAP Season 77 beach volleyball tournament at the UE Caloocan sand court.
Amanda Villanueva and Marleen Cortel gave a gallant fight to keep the Lady Falcons' championship hopes alive, but Fajardo and Demecillo's attacking game and combination plays were simply too much.
"Siyempre nandito na kami, paghahandaan namin ng sobra. Hindi namin palalagpasin 'yung pagkakataon na nasa Finals kami," said Fajardo. "Paghuhugutan namin 'yung experience sa laro."
A tough task awaits the Lady Spikers as they clash with UST's rookie pair of Cherry Rondina and Rica Rivera in the Finals at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, with the Tigresses holding a thrice-to-beat advantage after sweeping the seven-game eliminations.
UST is seeking a third championship to tie Adamson University as the winningest squad, while La Salle is aiming for its first-ever title at the sand court.
The Lady Spikers' previous best finish was second place behind the Lady Falcons in 2010.
Adamson University earlier ousted Far Eastern University, 21-13, 21-15, in the first stepladder match.
Meanwhile, UST and National University set up a Finals rematch for the men's championship after beating their respective foes in the Final Four.
The Growling Tigers' Mark Alfafara and Kris Roy Guzman defeated Far Eastern University's Greg Dolor and Joshua Barrica, 21-15, and 21-14.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs' pair of Edwin Tolentino and Josephnry Tipay clipped the Falcons' Rence Melgar and Michael Sudaria, 21-16, 21-16.
