MANILA, Philippines – Rain or Shine swingman Gabe Norwood provided the biggest highlights during Gilas Pilipinas' heartbreaking 81-85 loss to Argentina in their FIBA World Cup game on Monday night.
In the first quarter, Norwood made an emphatic statement as he finished off the Gilas fastbreak by posterizing Argentina's Luis Scola to give the Philippines a 19-12 lead with 3:22 to go.
He added to his highlight reel in the third period, faking a handoff to naturalized center Andray Blatche before driving into the middle of the lane and soaring for another slam dunk, which allowed Gilas to tie the game at 48-all.
"It's the world stage, and I think you see our hearts out there in the game," Norwood told reporters after the contest. "We're playing the best we can and giving everything out there."
Norwood and the rest of Gilas would come up short in the final period, however, and their backs are now against the wall in the competition as they have to win their remaining two games to have a chance of advancing to the next round.
