MANILA, Philippines – An amateur boxing tournament was held in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija over the weekend as part of the city’s celebration for the 116th Unang Sigaw Festival.

Boxing fans trooped to a gym in Cabanatuan City, with each one having their own favorites in the tournament.

Two brothers, Jomari and Glenn Faustino, participated in the competition despite their young age. Both Faustino brothers said that their favorite boxer is world superbantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire.

The nine-year-old Glenn said he does not take each fight personally, saying what’s important is the prize he wins when he fights.

“Yung pera at medalya, pambili ng pagkain,” he said.

According to the Provincial Sports and Youth Development Service, the boxing tournament is held yearly before the Unang Sigaw Festival.

“Mahalaga ito in the sense na, nade-develop yung mga bata,” said Rosana Tomagas, Nueva Ecija’s Sports and Youth Development Service coordinator. “’Yung mga nananalo, dine-develop pa sila. May trainers tayo from Fort Magsaysay, sila ang nagt-train sa mga bata for local and national competitions.”

Tomagas said the province sends some of the promising young boxers to a school where they can further develop their skills. -- Report from Cris Zuniga, ABS-CBN News North Central Luzon
