MANILA, Philippines – Three Filipino chess players won an international chess competition in Thailand which attracted over 150 participants from seven different countries.
Conrado Diaz, Cesar Palla, and Rommel Posadas all proved their worth in a field that also included players from Thailand, Macedonia, India, China, Japan and Korea.
Diaz, a former Adamson standout, topped the FIDE-rated rapid event Open section after going undefeated in five games of play in the Chess4Thai Main Event 2014 at the Cha-Da Hotel.
Playing with the white pieces, he beat Thanadon Kulpruethanon of Thailand in the final round in their Slav exchange skirmish.
Meanwhile, Apalla, an ex-Rizal Technological University player, shared top honors with Posadas as they agreed to a draw in their game.
Both players tallied 4.5 points in the non-FIDE-rated rapid event.
Meanwhile, National Master Ric Portugalera owned the Bangkok Chess Club Blitz Tournament last Friday at the Queen Victoria in Bangkok. -- By Marlon Bernardino
