MANILA, Philippines – Army aims to wrap up its best-of-three series against Cagayan Valley when the two squads face off in Game 2 of the Shakey's V-League Season 11 Open Conference Finals Sunday afternoon at the San Juan Arena.
Army drew first blood in the short series when it crushed Cagayan Valley in a four-setter, 25-19, 18-25, 25-18, and 25-5. The five points that Cagayan Valley scored in the fourth set were a record low for a Finals game.
"We want to get this thing over and done with, because we are also playing in the AFP Olympics which starts on Tuesday," said Army coach Rio de Guzman.
Cagayan Valley head coach Nes Pamilar was admittedly disappointed with his players' performance in Game 1 but believes they can get an equalizer in today's game.
"Our reception was really bad and our defense upfront was on and off. We just need to be consistent. I was also disappointed with how we collapsed in the fourth set. We just lost it completely there," Pamilar said in the league website.
"We played a little tight and nervous most of the match. We must show them we're not intimidated and we can compete against them, even though we're the underdogs in the series," he added.
Cagayan Valley won the Open Conference crown last year with a brilliant 16-game sweep of the conference, but they are facing a powerhouse Army team that features several former league MVPs and newly crowned MVP Rachel Ann Daquis.
Pamilar hopes the Rising Suns can play the way they did in the second set of Game 1.
"That second set showed what we really are," he said. "If we can play like that the whole game, we'll have a chance," he said.
Game time is at 2:45 p.m.
At 12:45 p.m., PLDT and Air Force will contest the third place spot, with Air Force holding a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.
