MANILA, Philippines – Only two teams remained unbeaten in both divisions of the UAAP Season 73 Badminton tournament after the weekend games at Rizal Memorial Badminton Court.
Defending champion University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Tigers remained unscathed in the men’s division together with Ateneo Blue Eagles while last season’s title protagonists in the women’s division – De La Salle Lady Archers and University of the East (UE) Lady Warriors – shared the top spot with spotless 4-0 marks.
The UST Tigers blasted the UE Red Warriors, 5-0, last Saturday before going through the wringer last Sunday in a 3-2 win against Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws.
The tandem of Derrick Chan and Peter Gabriel Magnaye gave UST the win over FEU in the second doubles match, 21-15, 21-23, 21-15, against Angelito Flores and Jason Quiben.
Ateneo, meanwhile, also went the same route, pulling off a pulsating 3-2 victory over arch-rival and last season’s runner up La Salle last Saturday before blanking National University (NU), 5-0, last Sunday.
The pair of Patrick Natividad and Antonino Gadi clinched the tie with an easy 21-12, 21-12 win against the tandem of Nej Martinez and Ivan Angsico.
After the heartbreaking setback, the Green Archers vented their ire on Adamson Falcons with a sound 5-0 beating in less than two hours.
La Salle improved to 3-1 and caught UP in a tie for second spot.
The Maroons, whose only loss was against Katipunan neighbor Ateneo, strung up two consecutive victories over the weekend.
The Maroons smothered the Falcons, 5-0, last Saturday then yielded only the first doubles match in a 4-1 victory against the Tamaraws last Sunday.
FEU and NU are tied at 1-3 cards while Adamson and UE remained winless in four ties.
In the distaff side, the Lady Archers swept past the Lady Maroons, 5-0, last Saturday before coming back from 0-1 down to score a 4-1 win against the Tigresses last Sunday.
UST appeared headed for an upset when Patricia Barredo defeated Danica San Ignacio, 21-11, 17-21, 21-14.
But La Salle quickly recovered and blanked UST the rest of the way to march to a 4-0 card tied with UE.
The Lady Warriors scored a 3-2 win against the Lady Tamaraws last Saturday before splashing to a 4-1 victory against Ateneo last Sunday.
The final score against FEU appeared close but it was far from that as UE took the first three matches to clinch the victory before yielding the last two to peg the final tally.
FEU slid to 3-1 while UST and UP tied with an even 2-2 slates.
Adamson has only 1 win so far against three losses while Ateneo and NU languished at the bottom with 0-4 records.
