MANILA, Philippines – Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire will take on fellow champion Nicholas Walters in a featherweight title unification bout on October 18 in Carson, California, ESPN.com reported.
Donaire holds the World Boxing Association's "super champion" belt while Walters holds the "regular" version of the featherweight belt also for the WBA.
The bout will be the HBO-televised opener of a fight card that is headlined by the middleweight title showdown between Gennady Golovkin and Marco Antonio Rubio, ESPN said.
"This just makes the show even bigger and better," said Golovkin's promoter Tom Loeffler.
"They (Donaire and Walters) are both Top Rank fighters, but we wanted to make the best fight possible even if it didn't involve our fighters. This fight adds a lot of value to Gennady's fight with Rubio," he added.
Donaire is coming off a fifth round technical decision win over South Africa's Simpiwe Vetyeka, while Walters won his own championship in the undercard of the Donaire-Vetyeka bout by knocking out faded veteran Vic Darchinyan in the fifth round.
Walter will likely be a dangerous opponent for Donaire, as the Jamaican boxer has won all 24 of his fights, with 20 wins coming by knockout.
Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti also told ESPN that the fight has "not yet been signed but has been agreed to."
