MANILA, Philippines – Nicaraguan boxer Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez believes Filipino champion Donnie "Ahas" Nietes showed "cowardice" after the fighters' camps failed to agree on a title unification bout.
Gonzalez holds the World Boxing Association junior flyweight championship and has called out Nietes, the World Boxing Organization champion, for a title unification bout.
"I wanted to face Nietes, but he was afraid," Gonzalez said in a Boxing Scene report. "My attorneys told me they would not take the fight, and that's cowardice."
"Months ago, I made a public challenge and when he gets the opportunity to fight, he ran," he added.
Gonzalez claimed that his team had tried to put together a bout against Nietes for September 29, which will be featured in the undercard of the Tyson Marquez vs Brian Viloria event.
The Nicaraguan boxer said he will "continue (to work) hard every day" and that he still wants to fight Nietes for the title.
"Hopefully, the next time I make a challenge, Nietes will have the courage to accept it," Gonzalez said.
