The first encounter between Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana was more competitive and entertaining than expected, and boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard is expecting to see an even better show in their rematch.
"That fight is a very intriguing one," Leonard said of the Mayweather-Maidana rematch, which takes place on September 13 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, in a Yahoo! Sports interview.
"It was a close fight. I think now, both fighters know each other, so it's going to be a better fight, because they'll be better prepared," he added.
Mayweather won the first fight via a majority decision, but it was far from the comprehensive victory that boxing pundits and fans expected to witness.
Instead, Maidana was able to pressure Mayweather, push him against the ropes, and land punches. The Argentine certainly had more success against the American superstar than most of his previous opponents.
"They thought Maidana won because it went the distance, because it was a tougher fight than expected," Leonard observed.
"I mean, I expected Mayweather to blow him away, but Maidana's a force to be reckoned with. We'll see," he added.
Leonard did not give a prediction, although he said that fans will "see more punches and probably a knockdown" come September 13.
"I'm excited about that rematch," he stressed.
