Ateneo, Arellano post contrasting wins in Fr. Martin
MANILA, Philippines – Defending champion Ateneo and Arellano University pulled off contrasting wins at the resumption of the 12th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup Monday at the St. Placid Gym at the San Beda College.
Ateneo relied on Hubert Cani, who scored 16 points, as they smothered College of St. Benilde, 75-55, and cruised to their fourth straight win in Group B.
Cani struck hard in the third period, scoring all of his 16 points in the frame to help the Blue Eagles build a 17 point lead, 57-40.
The Blue Eagles took charge early after building a 24-8 lead in the first period, with Francesco Asuncion and Adrian Wong scoring 10 points apiece.
Meanwhile, Daryl Capara scored the winning basket with 15 seconds left for the Arellano Chiefs in their 65-62 victory over Letran A.
The Chiefs improved to 1-1 in Group A.
In another seniors game, the Enderun Titans subdued the De La Salle Green Archers, 81-63, behind a 34-point performance from Jordan Rios to pick up their second win in five games in Group A.
The Titans surprised the Green Archers with an 11-0 salvo in the first quarter, with Rios delivering 12 points as they took a 23-13 first quarter edge.
In other matches, Dave Cabanilla scored 23 points for the Adamson Baby Falcons as they beat the Arellano Braves, 80-76, and San Benildo prevailed over Far Eastern University, 66-60, in the juniors division.
Last Saturday, Mark Tamayo had 17 points for Angeles University Foundation as they beat TIP-B, 79-69. San Beda-B outplayed San Sebastian, 76-66, while San Beda-A turned back the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, 62-56.
In juniors action, St. Jude beat the University of Santo Tomas, 75-48.
