La Salle dedicates win to Robredo

MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) – The De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers thrashed the University of the East (UE) Red Warriors, 73-52, in the UAAP men's basketball at the Mall of Asia in Pasay City on Saturday.

Jeron Teng led the Archers with 16 points and 10 rebounds, earning him the Jollibee Champ of the Game. DLSU center Norbert Torres backed him up with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

It was the first double-digit win for DLSU this season.

The Archers dedicated the game to the late Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo by wearing a patch with the initials "J.M.R." on their basketball uniforms.

Robredo was a graduate of DLSU.

La Salle struggled in the first quarter where UE led, 16-15, behind the perimeter shooting of Warriors Christopher Javier and Roi Sumang.

But the Archers were able to foil the Warriors in the following period as Teng’s offense pushed La Salle ahead with a 31-24 halftime lead.

La Salle never looked back since.

The Archers broke the game wide open with a scorching 17-6 run in the fourth quarter for their biggest advantage at 21 points.

Sumang led UE with 17 points and 7 rebounds.

With the win, the Archers improved to 5-3, moving them into a tie with the National University (NU) Bulldogs in the middle of the standings.

The Red Warriors fell to 1 win and 8 losses and last in the league.

Last Thursday, UE replaced coach Jerry Codiñera with David “Boycie” Zamora.
