MANILA, Philippines – China thoroughly dominated Batang Gilas, 91-49, in their Group E showdown in the 23rd FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship early Sunday morning at the Al Gharrafa Indoor Stadium in Doha, Qatar.
No Filipino player scored in double digits as they struggled against the taller Chinese players. They led only once, 4-2, after a Mark Dyke lay-up, but were soon overwhelmed.
After going down by only seven points, 22-15, in the opening period, Batang Gilas was outscored by China 22-10 in the second quarter and were never able to get back in the game.
Brandrey Bienes top-scored for Batang Gilas with nine points but Randge Tongo was held scoreless, and Kobe Paras struggled from the field as he made only one of seven field goals.
Zhao Rui torched the Filipinos for 25 points and four other players finished in double-digits for China.
China remains undefeated in Group E with a 4-0 record and looks to be in a collision course with Korea in a battle for the top spot in the group.
Batang Gilas is tied with Malaysia with identical 2-2 records.
