MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Under 18 basketball team fought from 15 points down to pull off a come-from-behind 82-79 victory over host team Qatar at the FIBA Asia Under 18 Championship in Doha.
The Batang Gilas, which succumbed to a 69-87 defeat to South Korea last Thursday, refused to be denied as Dave Yu, Paul Desiderio and Chino Mosqueda rained triples in the fourth to turn back the Qataris.
Yu, who nailed three straight triples in the payoff period, paced the nationals with 16 points, while Kobe Paras had a total of 13 markers, 4 rebounds and an assist, according to FIBA Asia.net.
Abdulrachman Saad paced Qatar by muscling his way against the Filipinos defense to help his team put up a 15 point spread, 68-53, at the onset of the fourth quarter.
Fortunately for Batang Gilas, Yu caught fire and rifled three straight shots from beyond the arc to help cut the deficit to 8 points at 70-62.
Desiderio and Mosqueda joined the incursion to pull the nationals within 78-79.
Desiderio then scored another basket before Tongco provided the finishing kick by splitting his free throws to seal the win.
