MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATED) Jerry Codiñera will no longer be the head coach of the University of the East (UE) Red Warriors and will instead take on a bigger role in the school's sports department, the university announced in a statement Thursday.
"(Codiñera) has been assigned a bigger task as Sports Consultant of the University, to help strengthen UE's sports programs," UE said in a statement released to Inbound Pass.
UE said that Codiñera's "more than three decades of experience in the sporting arena would surely be beneficial in the broader, more time-requiring responsibility of attending to UE's entire sports program."
Codiñera will be replaced by another former Red Warrior, David "Boycie" Zamar.
"Coach Zamar will now steer the all-Filipino UE Red Warriors as the entire squad faces its opponents anew for the UAAP Season 75 tournament's second round," the university said.
"Coach Codiñera, as UE Sports Consultant, is expected to remain on hand to provide inspiration and support to the UE Red Warriors."
Codiñera became the UE head coach in January 2011. In Season 74 of the UAAP, he led the Red Warriors to a 3-11 record; the squad did not make it to the Final Four.
The Red Warriors currently have a 1-6 record in Season 75. -- With a report from ANC.
