MANILA – Rain or Shine's prized guard Paul Lee has requested a trade to another team despite being offered a 3-year contract extension worth P15.12 million by the Elasto Painters management.
According to his agent, Lawrence Chongson, Lee wants to be traded in time for the coming PBA Rookie Draft where Rain or Shine could go for the player it wants.
“We just want to show our courtesy to Rain or Shine, so ngayon pa lang sinasabihan na namin sila that Paul Lee has expressed his desire to be trade,” said Chongson in Snow Badua’s Spin.ph report.
“Ang amin lang dito is may intensyon na si Paul na ma-trade,” added Lee’s representative. “Kaya ko sinasabi ito para sa courtesy sa kanila na pag nag-draft sila (with the No. 2 pick overall) pwede silang mag Chris Banchero o Kevin Alas sa draft.”
Lee’s contract with the Elasto Painters is set to expire this month.
The Rain or Shine management made efforts to keep the combo guard, who has been a vital cog in the team’s previous successes in the PBA.
In fact, Rain or Shine extended a P15.12 million-three year contract to Lee. “Nagbigay na kami sa manager niya kahapon ng offer sheet. Maximum ‘yun. P420,000 [a month] tapos three years,” said team Governor Mert Mondragon in a previous report.
However, Rain or Shine later said it won’t stop Lee from leaving the team, even suggesting that they could trade away the former University of the East (UE) standout for a big man that they need.
"Basta't sabi ko nga, ibigay sa amin ang big man na kailangan namin. 'Yun na lang kasi ang kulang sa team namin eh," the Elasto Painters official said.
Lee is reportedly being actively pursued by San Miguel Beer.
"Kahit sa San Miguel. Pwede kaming makipag-trade. Tamang-tama, marami silang big man, di ba?" said Mondragon.
