MANILA, Philippines – Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao said that as Paul Lee's mentor, he deserves an explanation for the player's request to be released from the Elasto Painters squad.
Lee's agent Lawrence Chongson announced that the prized guard wants out of Rain or Shine -- a move that took Guiao by surprise.
“The way we know Paul hindi siya yung tipong tao na (out of the blue) na pupunta sa media at sasabihin na gusto ko magpa-trade without facing us. Maganda ang samahan namin in the last three years,” said Guiao in Alder Almo's report in Philstar.com.
He said the move was uncharacteristic of Lee.
“I think we deserve an explanation,” said Guiao.
Chongson earlier said Lee expressed desire to be traded to give Rain or Shine a better chance at picking the right players in the coming PBA rookie draft.
“Kaya ko sinasabi ito para sa courtesy sa kanila na pag nag-draft sila (with the No. 2 pick overall) pwede silang mag Chris Banchero o Kevin Alas sa draft,” said the agent.
Lee is currently practicing with Gilas Pilipinas in Spain for the upcoming FIBA World Cup of Basketball. Guiao said that for now, they will let the player concentrate in his training camp in Spain.
He also said that they want to keep Lee in the team.
Guiao, however, said that if Lee really wants to leave Rain or Shine then they will have to get a fair trade.
“Kung talagang hindi na maiiwasan na mapunta tayo sa option na gusto niya talaga magpa-trade then wala tayong magagawa. As long as it’s a fair deal, value for value, payag kami,” he said.
“Hindi namin siya igi-give up ng basta ganun lang.”
