MANILA -- Pinay tennis players Rafa Villanueva and Mica Cruz have qualified for the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Future Stars Tournament, which will be held at the billion-dollar Singapore Stadium in October.
Cruz topped the 14 and 16 Under division in the recently concluded Olivares Tournament, while Villanueva ended up as the runner-up.
"Actually before, nagrunner up ako sa badminton, pero my dad taught me to play tennis," said Villanueva.
They will join other players from Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Laos, Brunei, Myanmar, China, Korea, Australia and India.
The WTA Future Stars tournament will conicide with the WTA Finals, which will feature the top 8 women players in the world.
"The introduction of the WTA Future Stars junior tournament series is aimed to encourage young girls throughout the Asia - Pacific region to become active through tennis," said WTA Finals Tournament Director, Melissa Pine.
Vllanueva and Cruz will get a chance to meet and get tips from tennis idols like Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova and Li Na.
