MANILA, Philippines – Filipino cue masters Dennis Orcollo and Lee Vann Corteza are ready to plunge into action at the 2012 Partypoker.net World Cup of Pool at the Robinsons Place Manila starting September 4.
Orcollo and Corteza will make up Philippines Team A in the $250,000 billiards team event, with $60,000 going to the eventual champions.
In their opening match, Orcollo and Corteza will face the dangerous Swiss pair of Dimitri Jungo and Ronni Regli.
Making up Philippine Team B are billiards champions Efren “Bata” Reyes and Francisco “Django” Bustamante. The veteran pair will play Hong Kong in their opening round match.
In last year’s World Cup of Pool, the tandems of Orcollo and Ronato Alcano, as well as Reyes and Bustamante, represented the Philippines, but both pairs bowed out in the quarterfinal round.
Reyes and Bustamante had won the inaugural edition of the tournament back in 2006 in Newport, England when they beat Americans Earl Strickland and Rodney Morris. The duo repeated their feat in the 2009 edition of the event.
There are a total of 32 teams competing, with 31 nations represented. As the host nation, the Philippines are allowed to have two teams in the event.
In other first round matches, 2004 World Pool Champion Alex Pagulayan will make his return to Manila, this time representing Canada together with John Morra.
They are up against Swedish duo Marcus Chamat and Andreas Gerwen.
Meanwhile, the defending champions Ralf Souquet and Thorsten Hohmann of Germany will start their title defense against qualifiers from Serbia.
The United States, composed of 2008 champions Morris and Shane Van Boening, will face a tricky contest against the flamboyant Indian duo Raj Hundal and Amar Kang. By Marlon Bernardino
