MANILA, Philippines – The Batang Gilas succumbed to its first defeat in the FIBA-Asia Under-18 Championship after bowing to South Korea, 87-69, in Qatar on Thursday.
The South Korean limited several members of the Philippine national squad, including Kobe Paras who was held to only six points.
Ranbill Tongco and Matthew Dyke were the only Batang Gilas players who were able to churn out double digits. Tongco had 24 points, while Dyke scored 10 markers to go with his 13 boards.
The Batang Gilas surged to a 10-4 lead in the opener but the South Koreans were quick on their feet, and turned the tables against the Filipinos, 23-17.
South Korea hiked the lead to 38-22 but Tongco managed to pull Gilas to within six points at the half, 45-39.
In the payoff period, the Koreans blasted the Filipinos, with a searing 15-6 run that had the Batang Gilas reeling.
The Philippines, which opened its FIBA stint with an 85-60 win over Jordan, now has a record of 1-1.
