MANILA, Philippines – Boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao wasn't able to attend the two-day PBA Draft Combine in Mandaluyong.

This, however, did not stop him from playing basketball elsewhere as he led his Team MP Hotel in a game against The Royal Mandaya Hotel-CMO at the 2014 Kadayawan Invitational Basketball Tournament in Davao on Tuesday.

According to Neil Bravo’s report on, Pacquiao was excused from attending the event in Mandaluyong, “supposedly to attend to matters in his district in Sarangani.”

Pacquiao, however, was seen playing for Team MP Hotel at the Davao City Recreation Center. His team lost against The Royal Mandaya Hotel-CMO, 64-81.

The fighting congressman, who was hired by PBA expansion team KIA Kamao as its head coach, is among the 95 hopefuls who submitted their applications for the 2014 PBA rookie Draft.

Pacquiao was hoping to become a player-coach, just like PBA legend Robert Jaworski.

“Mas maganda na may guwardiya tayo kasi kailangan kong masanay na sa ganito,” the boxer said after the game.

Pacquiao led his team with 10 points.

The draft applicants are mandated to attend the event where players take physical measurements, undergo shooting drills, take medical tests, go through five-on-five drills and perform various athletic tests in front of PBA coaches and scouts.
