MANILA, Philippines – The GlobalPort Batang Pier will take Filipino-American guard Stanley Pringle with the first pick of the 2014 PBA Rookie Draft, head coach Pido Jarencio said in an interview with the league website.
"Wala na. Wala nang tanong doon. Pringle na talaga," Jarencio said.
The coach is confident that the 27-year-old Pringle can mesh with the players that they already have in their line-up.
"Bakit naman hindi? Mas bibilis kami," said Jarencio. "Pringle will play at the point, tapos si Terrence (Romeo) will be at two-guard."
GlobalPort nabbed the top pick in the draft ahead of the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters after a season that saw them struggle anew even with players like Jay Washington and Alex Cabagnot as well as Romeo.
In a separate interview, Pringle said he was honored to be considered as one of the top prospects in the draft.
"It's just a blessing. I'm happy to be considered one of the top picks. Just going in really makes me more excited and I just take the situation as it is," he said.
Before declaring for the draft, Pringle showcased his talent in leagues in Belgium and Poland, but last played for the Indonesia Warriors in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL).
He participated in Tuesday's Draft Combine, where he says he "did all right."
"I came out focused, getting through all the tests, not getting hurt because it's slippery. I just wanted to be solid," said Pringle.
Jarencio said that aside from Pringle, they are also looking to take the best available talent at the 17th and 19th picks.
"Covered na namin almost all positions. Ang iniisip na lang namin is sino 'yung mgagaling na rookie dito," said the coach.
