MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine national under-18 basketball team had a superb start in the FIBA-Asia Under-18 Championship by smashing Jordan, 85-60, at the Al-Gharafa Gym in Doha, Qatar on Wednesday.
Jordan put up a challenge early in the game by matching the Batang Gilas, 16-all, but Radge Tongco and Andrei Caracut led the way for the Filipinos by instigating a 15-4 run.
The Filipinos’ lead went up as high as 33 points in the third canto, 72-39.
Tongco finished the game with a total of 24 points on 11-out-of-17 clip from the field. Caracut tallied 11 points, while Paul Desiderio and Chino Mosqueda had 10 apiece.
The Philippine squad earned a bye to the second round, as they are part of Group B that only features three teams instead of four.
On Thursday, Batang Gilas will play South Korea, which also trashed Jordan, 95-38, during the tournament opener.
