MANILA, Philippines – Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) veteran contender Dan “Hendo” Henderson believes he has what it takes to unseat Jon "Bones" Jones, the UFC's dominant light heavyweight champion.
Though listed as an underdog, Henderson remains confident that he can conquer the seemingly unbeatable Jones when they clash for the title at UFC 151.
“With Jon Jones, I plan on winning every round. I want to make sure I win every round so there’s no question,” Henderson said in an interview with UFC.com.
“If I can hit him in the right spot pretty hard at the right time and finish him, it’s even better. I think he’s a little bit cocky,” he added.
Henderson said he is prepared for Jones’ unorthodox striking game, including his elbows, knees and kicks. He also wants to be the first man in UFC history to take Jones down to the ground.
“Once I’m inside and tight with him, I plan on definitely putting him on his back and seeing how he fights from there. We haven’t really seen him on his back at all,” Henderson noted.
Jones won the title against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua last year and successfully defended the belt three times, with all title defenses coming against former champions.
But Henderson, who has won titles at Pride and Strikeforce, does not seem worried about Jones’ record and said he will not waste the opportunity given to him.
“I plan on making the best of it and making sure I come out on top, no matter what it takes,” he said. “If I can do what I know I can do, then I’m going to beat anybody out there.”
“I know that I can beat anybody out there if I perform the way I know I can,” Henderson added.
