MANILA, Philippines -- The Ateneo Blue Eagles humiliated the UST Growling Tigers with a near perfect game, 82-57, to remain unbeaten in the 74th season of UAAP men's basketball.
The Eagles outran, outgunned and outrebounded the listless Tigers, who could only do little against their foes’ offensive might.
|UST struggled mightily against Ateneo.
Nico Salva again led Ateneo with 20 points on 7-of-11 field goal shooting. He also tallied 7 rebounds and dished out 2 assists.
The Eagles quickly established its dominance in the first quarter by zooming to a 15-6 lead.
Ateneo continued to pile points in the following period, 25-12, as Salva and Keifer Ravena started to make their presence felt.
Karim Abdul and Jeric Teng came to UST’s rescue by putting together a string of plays to cut Ateneo’s lead to 25-16.
But Greg Slaughter quelled the Tigers’ run with a 3-point play, helping the Eagles post a 40-22 halftime lead.
UST’s defense remained ineffective against Ateneo in the third quarter as the Katipunan-based dribblers hiked their lead up to 30 points, 61-31.
Carmelo Afuang tried to bring the Tigers back into the game with back-to-back baskets, but his efforts fell short as the Eagles closed the third quarter with a 68-37 advantage.
In the fourth canto, Ateneo’s defense forced UST to take its shots from the outside.
The Tigers, however, had little success in its perimeter offense with only Fortuna and Karim making the shots.
UST threatened Ateneo with a 15-6 exchange capped by Jeric Teng's triple with over 3 minutes remaining in the game.
But that was the Tigers’ last hurrah as Salva and Justin Chua blasted UST defense up to the end of regulation.
It was UST’s 5th loss in 11 games.
The last time the Tigers lost in similar fashion was in 2009, when they bowed to the Far Eastern University Tams, 90-63.
Ateneo, meanwhile, improved to its 9th straight victory.
