MANILA, Philippines – American boxer Chris Algieri has issued an ice bucket challenge to Filipino ring icon Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao ahead of their November 22 showdown for the WBO welterweight championship.
In a video posted on his Instagram account Tuesday morning, Algieri joined the growing group of celebrities and athletes who had buckets of ice water dumped on them in an effort to raise awareness and funds about Lou Gehrig's disease.
"The person I'm challenging is the man I'm challenging on November 22nd, and that's Manny Pacquiao," Algieri said just before a companion dumped a huge bucket of ice water on him. "Enjoy, Manny!"
The ice bucket challenge has swept the United States recently, with high-profile athletes like LeBron James accepting the dare, and then challenging other personalities to do the same.
On Monday, former professional wrestler Dave Bautista accepted the challenge of his "Guardians of the Galaxy" co-star Chris Pratt, and even raised the stakes as he not only had a bucket of ice water dumped on him, but soaked in a tub filled with ice as well.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, host Jimmy Fallon, and singer Justin Timberlake have all taken the challenge in recent weeks. Just today, Marvel actors Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth also took the challenge.
According to the ALS Association, the ice bucket challenge have raised $15.6 million in donations as of August 18.
