MANILA, Philippines – Vince Hizon may be enjoying his brief stint as the head coach of the Adamson Falcons in the UAAP, but he is already looking forward to Kenneth Duremdes' return to the bench.
Hizon has served as the head coach of Adamson for their past two games, with both contests ending in losses.
"I look forward to the time when Coach Kenneth gets back soon, I have a headache already," Hizon joked after their 61-59 loss to UST last Saturday.
"But in all seriousness, it's been fun. I enjoy it," he quickly added. "But Coach Kenneth is definitely the coach of this team."
It is the first time that Hizon has served as a head coach of a team, and the opportunity only came to him because Duremdes is dealing with a personal affair.
"I've only been coaching because Coach Kenneth asked me, middle of last year, and little did I know that I would be head coaching for a few games," he explained.
Hizon said he gained insight from the coaches that he played for in his career and tried to put them all together as he leads the Falcons.
"Coach Chot (Reyes), Baby Dalupan, Sonny Jaworski – these are huge names, and I take a bit of everything that they taught me, and I bring it – whether it be X and Os or trying to rally the guys and give them fighting spirit," he explained.
"I think that's something that will stay with me. I've had incredible coaches and I’m just trying to emulate what they did," he added.
Although he has enjoyed the experience, there is something that Hizon likes even more than being a coach.
"I really enjoy teaching. More than head coaching, I enjoy teaching and I like to teach kids what's the proper basics and all of these things," Hizon said.
