Jao to quiz 'player no. 11' for slapping incident

MANILA, Philippines – The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) has suspended University of Sto. Tomas’ Bettina Penaflor and Kim Reyes for hitting members of the National University (NU) women’s basketball team, when the Tigresses played against the Lady Bulldogs over the weekend.

UAAP commissioner Andy Jao has given Penaflor and Reyes a one-game suspension for their rugged play while the Lady Bulldogs were on a 12-2 run in the third quarter of the match.

Jao said Penaflor was caught “elbowing an opponent above the shoulder,” while Reyes was spotted “punching an opponent” during the game. The actions have prompted game officials to eject both players from the match.

Jao said the ejection merits a one-game suspension per league rules.

"You will be suspended for you next game vs. De La Salle University on August 20, 2014," the league commissioner said in his memo.

Likewise, Jao also summoned UST Tigresses head coach Chris Cantonjos to explain his side regarding the unnecessary contact with the league referees during the game.

Jao also instructed the coach to bring along UST's "player No. 11" for allegedly slapping two NU players during the handshake of teams.

NU won that game, which took place at the Araneta Coliseum on Saturday, 73-68.
