MANILA, Philippines – Filipino billiards masters Dennis “Robocop” Orcollo and Lee Vann “The Slayer” Corteza will team up once more to represent the Philippines when the World Cup of Pool returns to Manila in September.
Orcollo and Corteza will make up PH Team A in the billiards event that will be held at the Robinson’s Place Manila from September 4-9.
Meanwhile, billiards champions Efren “Bata” Reyes and Francisco “Django” Bustamante will be making up PH Team B.
As the host nation, the Philippines are allowed to have two teams in the event, according to Aristeo “Putch” Puyat.
Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines founding head Ceferino “Perry” Mariano believes that the team of Orcollo and Corteza may have a better shot of winning this year’s World Cup of Pool.
Reyes and Bustamante are fan favorites but their age may hamper their cause, although their experience in international competition will surely be a factor.
Both Philippine teams are on a mission to put the country back on top of the pool game.
In last year’s World Cup of Pool, the tandems of Orcollo and Corteza, and Reyes and Bustamante, also represented the Philippines but both teams bowed out in the quarterfinal round.
Reyes and Bustamante won the inaugural tournament back in 2006 in Newport, England after they beat Americans Earl Strickland and Rodney Morris. They repeated their feat in 2009 but lost in 2011 to the German duo of Ralf Souquet and Thorsten Hohmann.
There are a total of 32 teams in this year’s World Cup of Pool, representing 31 nations.
At stake is the total prize fund of $250,000, with $60,000 going to the eventual champions. By Marlon Bernardino
