MANILA, Philippines – It's official: Rain or Shine guard Paul Lee and naturalized players Andray Blatche will be part of the Gilas Pilipinas squad that will compete in the FIBA World Cup in Spain later this month, national team head coach Chot Reyes announced.
In a tweet posted Monday afternoon, Reyes announced that Lee will take the place of the injured Larry Fonacier, while Blatche will be the national team's naturalized player for the tournament.
This means longtime naturalized player Marcus Douthit, who was a vital part of the squad that won silver in the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship, will not be part of the World Cup team.
According to the Gilas Pilipinas website, the members of the Philippine team for the 2014 FIBA World Cup are as follows:
Ranidel De Ocampo
June Mar Fajardo
"From the Gilas Pilipinas Player Pool, out of the FIBA World Cup line-up are Marcus Douthit, Jared Dillinger, Beau Belga, Jay Washington and Larry Fonacier (due to an injury)," it said.
Gilas is in Group B of the FIBA World Cup along with Senegal, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Greece, and Croatia. The tournament kicks off on August 30.
