MANILA, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas, playing without naturalized center Andray Blatche, suffered a huge loss on Monday as they were routed by Ukraine, 114-64, in their tournament in Antibes, France.
Blatche and guard Paul Lee both did not see action in the game due to minor injuries, and without them, the national team were crushed by the hot shooting of the Ukrainians.
Ukraine converted 19 of their 33 attempts from beyond the arc and scored 40 points in the second quarter alone, while holding the Filipinos to only 19 points.
The 40-19 difference in the second frame turned a 21-16 Ukraine lead into a 61-35 advantage, which Gilas was unable to recover from.
Gilas Pilipinas thus ended the mini-tournament in France with a 0-3 record.
The Filipinos started on a bright note, dropping a close 68-75 game to the host nation but were routed by Australia, 97-75, in their second game.
After the tournament, Gilas will return to Spain where they will play another set of tune-up games ahead of their campaign in the 2014 FIBA World Cup that begins on August 30.
