MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – The De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers sneaked past the National University (NU) Bulldogs in double overtime, 87-86, behind the 35 points of rookie standout Jeron Teng.
Teng’s scoring outburst on Saturday set a new UAAP record for most points scored by a freshman, surpassing the 25-point performance of University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroon’s Mikee Reyes in 2009.
Teng, who shot 4 out of 7 from beyond the arc, also finished with 6 rebounds and 2 assists.
Teng figured in a scoring duel with Bobby Ray Parks Jr., who also scored 35 points for NU in a losing effort.
Parks also grabbed 7 rebounds, blocked 2 shots and notched 2 steals for the Bulldogs.
The 35-point performance by the two players was the most points scored by a player in the last 10 UAAP seasons.
Teng’s stellar play couldn’t have come at a better time for the Archers, as its big man Norbert Torres struggled offensively.
Torres scored his first field goal after 10 attempts with 4 minutes left in regulation.
Guard Almond Vosotros also chipped in 18 points for the Archers. He had a chance to win the game in regulation but missed a jumper at the buzzer, sending the game into overtime at 69-all.
Vosotros took over point guard duties for La Salle in double overtime after LA Revilla again went down with an ankle injury at the end of the 1st overtime.
La Salle opened the 2nd overtime with a 6-0 run and never trailed since.
Vosotros split his free throws with 5 seconds left in the game, giving La Salle an 87-83 lead.
Parks then raced the length of the court to hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer, to settle the final score at 87-86.
La Salle’s win puts them in a 4th place tie with NU in the 75th UAAP Men's Basketball standings, behind Ateneo, FEU and UST.
