MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) lacks funds to send a large delegation of athletes to the upcoming Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia this November.
POC President Jose “Peping” Cojuangco said the allocated budget for the SEA Games is only P30-million.
“Just to bring them (the athletes) there and to compete there, we require P100,000 per person,” Cojuangco said in an interview with ANC’s Hardball.
With the available budget, the POC will only be able to send, at most, 300 athletes and trainers to the SEA Games.
“We have been asking sponsors to come in and help us,” Cojuangco said. “Otherwise, we will not be able to send all the deserving athletes.”
Meanwhile, Richie Garcia, chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), assures the Filipinos that Team Philippines will be ready for the SEA Games.
“We are on schedule as far as training is concerned,” Garcia said.
