The University of Sto. Tomas Tigers blew out a 16-point lead in the fourth quarter and suffered a heartbreaker during overtime as the Far Eastern University Tamaraws pulled off a 74-69 win in the 71st UAAP men’s basketball competition Sunday.

Reil Cervantes steered the Tams with 20 points and grabbed three rebounds as he helped FEU stop the charging Tigers, which dominated the first three quarters, during the game at the Philisports Arena in Pasig City.

At the start, the Tigers immediately went down to work and piled up points in the first quarter. The Tamaraws, however, cut down the lead to level the score at 21-all.

UST then launched an assault in the second quarter, scoring 18 points against FEU’s 10 to take the lead, 39-31.

The Tigers continued to surge ahead of the Tamaraws in the third canto by posting a 16-point lead with 54-38.

FEU, however, bounced back in the fourth quarter by slowly chopping down the lead until it forced a sudden death with UST at 60-all.

Hobbled by poor free-throw shooting, the Tigers crumbled during overtime as the Tamaraws escape with the win.

With the win, FEU strengthened its third place ranking with a 7-3 win-loss slate. UST, meanwhile, fell to 4-6.
