NU, La Salle move closer to badminton semis

MANILA, Philippines – National University (NU) and De La Salle University moved closer toward securing the first two men's semifinals slots after beating separate foes in the UAAP Season 77 badminton tournament on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.

The Bulldogs dominated the Adamson University, 5-0, while the Green Archers routed the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons, 4-1, as elimination round action hit the midway mark.

Titleholder Ateneo kept within striking distance of the leaders with a 5-0 drubbing of Far Eastern University (FEU) also yesterday.

Reigning MVP Patrick Natividad led the Blue Eagles in snatching their third win in four starts that out them behind the unbeaten Bulldogs and Green Archers.

In the other tie, University of Santo Tomas blanked University of the East, 5-0. The Growling Tigers evened their record to 2-2 good for fourth place, while the Maroons, Falcons and Red Warriors remained tied at fifth at 1-3. The Tamaraws remained winless in four matches.

Joper Escueta set the tone for NU's win by dispatching Joshua Antonio, 21-8, 21-10, in the first singles, followed by Rosleenard Pedrosa's 21-10, 22-20 victory over Jerome Pechera in the second singles.

Peter Magnaye and Escueta made quick work of Keith Reyes and Edwin Viloria, 21-9, 21-10, in the first doubles, while Alvin Morada and Pedrosa beat Gerloth Delizo and Pechera, 21-13, 21-11, in the second doubles.

Morada capped the Bulldogs' one-sided triumph by disposing of Viloria, 21-17, 21-12, in the third singles.

De La Salle leaned on Gerald Sibayan and Kenneth Monterubio in singles and Sibayan and Carlos Cayanan in doubles, as well as Kenneth and Prince Monterubio to also stay unscathed.

The Fighting Maroons averted the shutout after Lorenzo Leonardo defeated Cayanan in the third singles.
