MANILA – University of the East (UE) overpowered University of the Philippines (UP) in lopsided 68-48 win in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Despite playing without top point guard Roi Sumang, the Red Warriors got plenty of scoring from Charles Mammie, Dan Alberto and Mark Olayon.
Mammie muscled his way to the paint for a total of 15 points and 14 boards, while Alberto and Olayon fired 11 and 10, respectively.
The Fighting Maroons, who came into the game with its first tournament victory last week, struggled early and came up with only 4 points against UE’s 18.
UP came to life midway the first half to cut the deficit to 25-22, but the Warriors foiled the incursion to make it 32-24 near the end of the half.
UE came out rampaging in the third canto and widened the gap to 51-36.
UP’s Mikee Reyes tried to stop the bleeding in the fourth, but the Recto-based dribblers’ 24 point-lead proved to be insurmountable for the Fighting Maroons.
Reyes tallied 19 points for UP.
UE improved to 4-4 in the absence of Sumang, who sprained his ankle during their game against University of Santo Tomas.
