MANILA – Chris Algieri is the perfect opponent who will make Manny Pacquiao look good in the ring, according to a boxing trainer.
Jeff Mayweather, uncle of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and a former boxer himself, said he sees nothing special about Algieri to deserve the Pacquiao fight.
“To be honest, I’m just not sold on him. He pulled off a squeaker [against Ruslan Provodniov], a fight that could have easily went to the other guy. It was great that he got the decision, but at the same time, it wasn’t impressive at all. There was nothing impressive about him to me,” Mayweather said in an interview with On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
The trainer was referring to Algieri’s WBO light welterweight title win where he pulled off a split decision despite being knocked down twice by Provodnikov last June.
“For a guy that was supposed to be a boxer, he didn’t do a great job of boxing,” said Mayweather.
Mayweather said Pacquiao will only look good because of Algieri’s “limitations.”
The New York-based fighter is scheduled to challenge the Filipino superstar on November 22 in Macau.
“He didn’t show me anything that would make me think that Manny Pacquiao has anything to worry about. I think that it’s a great fight for Manny, it will put him back on top and back in the winning column.”
