MANILA, Philippines – University of the East (UE) relied on a double-digit lead to quell a fourth-quarter fight back by the University of Sto. Tomas (UST), 72-62, at the UAAP men’s basketball tournament on Wednesday.
The Red Warriors’ 29-point advantage proved too much for the Growling Tigers to overcome, resulting in the Espana-based dribblers’ fourth defeat in seven starts.
Renz Palma paced UE with 14 points on five-of-eight field goal shooting, while Cameroonian big man Charles Mammie came up with a 13 big rebounds to go with his 12 points.
Skipper Pedro Galanza and Roi Sumang added nine and eight points, respectively, to help the Red Warriors snap a four-game slide, including that 91-93 heartbreaker to Ateneo last Sunday.
The Recto-based cagers quickly gained a 19-11 upper hand in the first period, and this lead ballooned to 29 points, 60-31, in the next two quarters.
But the Tigers, who played without Karim Abdul, unleashed a furious 14-0 run that brought the Warriors' lead down to 60-45.
UE responded with a short run of its own just enough to hamper UST.
Aljon Mariano had 21 points for the Tigers, which also got 12 points from Kevin Ferrer. Their efforts, however, fell short as UST ended the first round with a 3-4 win-loss record.
UE, on the other hand, sports a similar record, but was able to close the first-round eliminations with the victory.
