MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine national U17 team tried its best against their US counterpart, but the Americans were simply just too much for the Batang Gilas during their meeting at the FIBA Under-17 World Championship in Dubai early Tuesday morning.
The taller Americans dominated Batang Gilas by as much as 60 points, 124-64, handing the Filipinos’ third straight defeat in the tournament.
According to Ronnie Nathanielsz’s report to Philboxing, the closest the Pinoys got was at 16-18 early in the game.
But the US team unloaded a 14-0 run that had the Filipinos reeling 32-16 in the first half. The Americans never looked back since then.
Jolo Mendoza finished with 19 points for Batang Gilas, while Jolo Go added 12 points.
American forward Josh Jackson led the US team’s balanced scoring with 16 markers to go with his 11 rebounds. Malik Newman and Harry Giles, added 16 and 15 respectively.
