MANILA - Gilas Pilipinas routed the ACB Select Team in tune-up game in Vitoria, Spain, 89-58, to mark the first anniversary of their historic win against South Korea in last year's FIBA Asia Men’s Championship semifinals.
Gilas' victory exactly a year ago broke the ''Korean Curse'' and booked them a trip to the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain.
Naturalized Filipino Andray Blatche led the Philippine national team with 18 points while Paul Lee chipped in 10 points.
The Filipinos torched the Spaniards from beyond the arc, shooting an incredible 50 percent (13 of 26) from three.
Meanwhile, Juancho Hernangomez led the ACB Select with 12 points, while Alex Garcia contributed 11 points.
ACB is the Pro League in Spain.
Gilas Coach Chot Reyes said he was impressed with the team's ball movement and spacing.
"Well, the thing that I like most was the ball movement, the selflessness and the willingness to share the basketball," Reyes said after the game.
However, Reyes said that the real test for Gilas before the FIBA World Cup is still waiting for them in Antibes, France, where they will face a tough European nationals team.
"When we go to Antibes, we'll be playing real tough games, but this is a very good warm up for us," he said.
