UP Maroons upset Letran in Fr. Martin Cup

MANILA, Philippines -- The University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons leaned on the heroics of Mark Juruena as they pulled off an upset of the Letran Knights last Friday in the 11th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup.

Juruena barreled his way through the crowded paint and scored the buzzer-beating lay-up to lift the Maroons to a 67-66 victory against Letran in overtime.

The win was UP's first in two games, allowing them to tie Letran for third place in Group A.

The Maroons forced overtime when both teams missed two attempts in the final seconds of the game, after Kim Cinco had tied the contest at 58-all with a drive in the final 53.3 seconds.

In another game in the seniors division, the University of Perpetual Help Altas trounced Angeles University Foundation, 81-54, for their second straight win in Group B.

Meanwhile, in the juniors division, Paulo Cereno made one of two free throws in the last 5.5 seconds to carry the San Beda Red Cubs to a 70-69 win over the University of Sto. Tomas Tiger Cubs.

The Red Cubs, who drew a game-high 14 points from Miguel Salcedo, marched to their third consecutive victory in Group B.

In other juniors games, the National University Bullpups blasted the De La Salle Zobel Junior Archers, 88-57, to improve their record to 2-1.

Clyve Dungan scored 33 points for the Letran Squires as they defeated the Trinity Junior Stallions, 80-70.
