6 Pinoys share top spot in Malaysia chess

MANILA, Philippines -- Six Filipino chess players, including Grand Master (GM) John Paul Gomez, posted second consecutive victories to share the top spot in the 10th IGB Dato Arthur Tan International Open Chess Championship at the Mid Valley Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Gomez is tied for the lead with International Master (IM) Oliver Dimakiling, Fide Masters (FM) Roderick Nava and Randy Segarra, and National Masters (NM) Ali Branzuela and Roel Abelgas.

Gomez vaulted to the spot after beating Sumant Subramaniam and FM Ronnie Lim of Malaysia in succession. Dimakiling, meanwhile, prevailed over Cheah Cheok Fung of Malaysi and FM Yee Soon Wei.

Joining the Filipinos with two points as well are: GM Ma Qun, GM Zhou Jianchao, GM Wang Rui and GM Xiu Deshun of China; GM Abshijeet Gupta, GM Laxman R.R. and GM Suri Vaibhab, along with Pradeep Kumar R.A. and Andria L D'souza of India; IM Max Illingworth of Australia, and IM Nguyen Duc Hoa of Vietnam.

In the Amateur division of the tournament, NM Carlo Lorena and Bength Largo joined a large group of players with 2.0 points.

The Filipino chessers' campaign in the tournament is supported by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee. -- By Marlon Bernardino
