MANILA – Filipino-American champion Nonito Donaire Jr. said he won’t need any tune-up fight for his battle against WBO featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko of Ukraine.
Donaire, who won the WBA featherweight title by beating Simpiwe Vetyeka last May, has made himself available for a title unification bout against the Ukrainian.
“That will be a great fight, and I would love to put our belts together," the Filipino-American said in Boxing Scene.
Donaire described Lomachenko as a very polished fighter who has made his name in the amateur ranks.
"He's a good fighter, he's a smart fighter," said the Filipino Flash. “He knows how to win because he's one of the best amateurs, if not the best amateur.”
He, however, thinks that he doesn’t have to go through a tune-up bout before heading for a title unification against Lomachenko.
“When I came up to 126 [pounds], I didn't have a tune-up, when I went up to 122 I didn't have a tuneup, when I went to 118 going up, I didn't have a tune-up,” he said.
“If there's a challenge, I'll go for it. I'm willing to fight anybody, you know.”
