MANILA, Philippines – Top Rank promotions chief Bob Arum said Nonito Donaire Jr. will need to be in superb condition for his October title defense against Japan’s Toshiaki Nishioka.
Arum described Nishioka, the WBC super bantamweight emeritus champion, as an outstanding boxer.
“Nishioka is a tremendous fighter, I think he hasn't lost a fight in 7 years,” Arum told ABS-CBN’s Dyan Catillejo.
“Donaire has to be in shape or it would be a long night for him.”
The Filipino Flash will be staking his World Boxing Organization (WBO) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) super bantamweight crowns against Nishioka on October 13.
Donaire was supposed to tangle with Jorge Arce, but the Mexican slugger opted to have a tune up fight before facing the Filipino champion.
Donaire will fight Nishioka instead.
