MANILA, Philippines – World featherweight champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire is open to a title unification fight against Ukraine's Vasyl Lomachenko after winning the World Boxing Association belt earlier this year.
Lomachenko, a former Olympic gold medalist, has only fought three times as a professional but won a world title in only his third bout after upsetting American boxer Gary Russell, Jr.
"He's a good fighter, he's a smart fighter," Donaire told Boxing Scene of Lomachenko, who won Olympic gold in Beijing in 2008 and again in London in 2012. [http://www.boxingscene.com/donaire-ready-willing-fight-lomachenko-next—80739]
"He knows how to win because he's one of the best amateurs, if not the best amateur," he added. "But that will be a great fight, and I would love to put our belts together."
Donaire won the WBA belt – his fifth title in as many weight classes – after out-pointing South Africa's Simpiwe Vetyeka via technical decision last May.
Donaire made it clear that while he is "willing to fight anybody," he is very focused on taking on the other champions in the division.
"We want to get another title match," he stressed. "Either defend the title, or fight another champion."
"I'm always the type of fighter that will challenge other champions out there. If I'm in that division, I will challenge you," he said.
