MANILA, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas players have entered the homestretch of their buildup for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup as they set up camp in Spain.
The training pool arrived in Vitoria, Spain on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila) to begin practicing for tougher tune-up games before they plunge in the FIBA competition on August 30.
According to the PBA website, Gilas will hold twice-a-day practices with weight training in between, then participate in a pocket tournament in Antibes, France from August 15 to 17. Other teams joining the scrimmages are France, Australia, and Turkey.
Gilas will also join another mini-tournament in San Sebastian, Spain before heading to Seville on August 28, two days before the FIBA Worlds.
The tune-up games will be the basis for the selection of Gilas' final 12.
Coach Chot Reyes will have to pick 12 players among the pool that includes naturalized players Marcus Douthit and Andray Blatche and PBA players Jimmy Alapag, Jayson Castro, LA Tenorio, Paul Lee, Gary David, Jeff Chan, Gabe Norwood, Jared Dillinger, Marc Pingris, Ranidel de Ocampo, Jay Washington, Japeth Aguilar, Beau Belga, and June Mar Fajardo.
