MANILA, Philippines – Filipino billiards master Efren “Bata” Reyes settled for second place after failing to overhaul his American foe’s hot start in World 14.1 (World Straight Pool) Tournament in Flushing, New York over the weekend.

John Schmidt of Hesperia, California put the USA back on top in the 100th anniversary of the tournament after beating Reyes, 200-169, in the finals.

Schmidt reached the finals after outclassing Ralph Eckert of Germany, 200-60, while Reyes subdued reigning World 9-Ball champion and US Open 9-Ball Champion Darren Appleton of Great Britain, 200-108. By Marlon Bernardino
